History of The Florida Lions Eye Bank

In October 1961 Lions Clubs International and the Lions of Florida joined with the University Of Miami School Of Medicine’s Ophthalmology Department, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, to establish the Florida Lions Eye Bank. Opening in January 1962 with founding President Lion Jimmy Nelson, Past District Governor, and founding Medical Director Dr. Victor T. Curtin, more than 100 Lions Clubs in the South Florida region provided the main source of support and leadership for this organization. This being the first eye bank in Florida it quickly grew and by the 1980’s was one of the top three largest in the nation.

The Florida Lions Eye Bank's primary mission is to recover, process, and distribute ocular tissue for patients in South Florida and beyond. In its over 50 year history the Florida Lions Eye Bank has provided over 45,000 corneas for transplantation, over 35,000 pieces of sclera or cornea for glaucoma procedures or other ocular procedures, and over 30,000 eyes for research and/or teaching purposes.

In addition, since the Eye Bank’s founding, it has also operated a highly regarded ocular pathology laboratory that benefits thousands of patients each year. By examining eye tissue, the pathology lab investigates tumors, trauma, inflammatory and degenerative conditions, making valuable contributions for the treatment and eventual cure of blinding eye diseases.

In 2012, the Eye Bank celebrated 50 years of Giving the Gift of Sight. Throughout the year, the Eye Bank highlighted its five decades of success and accomplishments with several commemorative events and publications. Click here to see our commemorative 50th Anniversary Issue of Newsight.

Florida Lions Eye Bank Medical Director, Dr. Sander R. Dubovy, awarded Victor T. Curtin Chair in Ophthalmology.

On February 5th, amongst colleagues, family and friends, Eye Bank Medical Director, Dr. Sander R. Dubovy accepted the appointment of the Victor T. Curtin Chair in Ophthalmology, which was established with a major gift from the Lions of Florida to support experimental ophthalmic pathology. Ophthalmic pathology and the understanding of ophthalmic disease at the tissue level is integral to the treatment of patients and education of training ophthalmologists. Victor T. Curtin, M.D., Bascom Palmer’s second faculty member, established the Florida Lions Ocular Pathology Laboratory at Bascom Eye in 1962 and guided its growth for nearly 40 years. Today, it is directed by Sander R. Dubovy, M.D., one of only a handful of physicians who is board-certified in ophthalmology and anatomic pathology. If you would like to make a donation to the Florida Lions Eye Bank in honor of Dr. Dubovy and this momentous occasion click “Donate Funds” above.

Our Volunteers

Volunteers play an important role in the Eye Bank’s mission of providing the Gift of Sight. Many opportunities exist within the Florida Lions Eye Bank, including helping in our administrative offices and the Ocular Pathology Lab. Volunteers can also assist by staffing health fairs and by speaking about the importance of eye donation at special events.

Volunteer’s time and financial contributions are a great way to help us further our mission and to serve the community. Help us spread the word of the mission of the Florida Lions Eye Bank.
